As the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) celebrates its 40th anniversary, we reflect on a remarkable journey. Building upon the solid foundation established by its founding Director, Han Pao-Teh, and through the dedication of successive Directors and generations of staff, the Museum has grown into Taiwan's leading institution for science education and natural history research.
In recent years, the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) has continued to renew its permanent exhibition galleries. Following the opening of the new permanent exhibition "Nature's wonderland" in 2024 and "Earth's Treasures"—Taiwan's first permanent mineral exhibition, spanning nearly 2,000 square meters—in 2025, the Museum will undertake a comprehensive renewal of the Life Science Hall beginning in 2026 with the support of the Ministry of Education, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Looking ahead, the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) will continue to advance its vision of “Deeply Rooted Locally, Connected Globally.” By embracing the latest smart technologies and further developing the concept of a “Museum Without Walls,” the Museum is committed to enriching lifelong learning for all. Together with partners across society, we aspire to create a future that inspires scientific curiosity and fosters humanistic values for generations to come. |

Smoking opium can lead to addiction, damage to physical and mental health, and even death. In the early 19th century, Britain imported opium from India to China in order to balance its trade deficit with China. For the sake of people's health and avoiding the loss of silver abroad, the Qing government banned smoking in Guangdong by Lin Zexu and other officials, which triggered the first Opium War when Britain invaded China. In the second Opium War, the defeated Qing government by the allied forces of Britain and France had to allow the opium trade to be legalized. In order to avoid the outflow of silver, the Qing government relaxed its ban on smoking, and China's own opium production gradually caught up! The consequence of the overflow of opium is that tens of millions of people become opium addicts. Officials and opium dealers conspire for their own interests and endanger the stability of the country and the survival of the nation.
The purpose of this book is to help readers understand the dangers of drugs and stay away from them. |

NMNS is a depository for Taiwan’s natural treasures. To date, they have collected more than one million specimens and objects. This year, NMNS, in an effort to complement national celebrations, is holding the Taiwan centennial and NMNS 25th anniversary essence of collection special exhibition showcasing 100 specimens and objects. Altogether, the list totals 100 specimens and objects including 25 from the Zoology Department, 18 from the Botany Department, 28 from the Geology Department, and 29 from the Anthropology Department. The theme of this exhibition is “Open up the Precious”. This represents the enthusiasm of the exhibition planners in opening up the doors to the museum’s collection areas to share its treasures with the public. To the museum’s researchers, “precious” refers to the feeling of encountering species in their natural environment or of discovering relics and artifacts of earlier peoples and cultures. The specimens and objects in this catalog represent not only the “essence” of the collection but also its “retrospection”. On this, the 25th anniversary of the museum, in addition to moving some of the specimens and objects from the collection areas to share with visitors, we should think about what we have accomplished and what there is to be done during the next quarter century. |
