摘要 | This article examines how museum learning programs can be more inclusive for learners with special needs by applying universal design in developing and implementing learning programs. Through the case of STARRY NMNS, a program for learners on the autism spectrum, we describe how universal design can be used to promote engagement in the learning experience.
In recent years, social inclusion has become a hot topic being discussed in the museum field. Many museums are making effort to create better learning experiences for diverse visitors, including visitors who have physical or intellectual disabilities. For example, facility accessibility has been widely improved. However, it can be a challenge to enhance the participation and engagement in the learning experience of visitors with disabilities. After all, most learning programs in museums are designed for “typical” visitors. To include diverse visitors and achieve the goal of “Museum for All”, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can provide new insights for developing museum learning programs. The idea of UDL is to design learning experiences that are accessible and friendly for as many people as possible. UDL emphasizes to engage every learner in different ways that they are comfortable with by providing choice and flexibility. It enables people with and without disabilities to learn together in the same learning environment.
National Museum of Natural Science in Taiwan is now applying UDL in developing a learning program called STARRY NMNS for learners on the autism spectrum and their family. The program design adopted “Universal Design Guidelines for Public Programs in Science Museums” produced by NISE (National Informal STEM Education) Network. STARRY NMNS encourages not only visitors with autism but their parents and siblings to engage and learn together. All learners have access to a variety of sensory experiences with multiple resources such as picture books, specimens, hands-on activities and so on. Now, as the planning stage coming to an end, our team, including the autism specialists we consult with, all believe that with the consideration of universal design, this learning experience will be accessible, comfortable, meaningful and engaging. The implementation of the program will be in July 2018. We expect to gain feedback from learners and present the outcome at the conference. |
