摘要Marine protected areas (MPAs) are the important policy and tool for marine biodiversity conservation. However, the conservation efficacy of MPAs is strongly related to the strength of law enforcement and coastal management. Aquatic Animal and Plant Breeding Conservation Areas (BCA in abbreviation) designated by Fisheries Law is one type of MPA in Taiwan. In this research, we recorded fish assemblages and calculated functional groups and biomass in 28 BCAs around Taiwan. To understand the ecological status among these 28 BCAs, we used 10 quantified indices, including management strength, abandoned fishing gears, coral and sand coverage, occurrence of several conservation invertebrates, fish species numbers, densities, biomass, species number of large fishes and trophic niches, to evaluated the healthy status in each area from our in-situ survey data during 2018-2024. Our results indicated significant differences of the healthy indices values among BCAs. Several areas, such as Xiaoliuqiu, presented extremely low fish densities and biomass, especially in herbivore and piscivore niches. In summary, we found that areas with “no-take zone”, such as Chaojing and Green island, had a rather positive results in fishery resources. The fish species numbers, densities and biomass of Chaojing had grown by several times compared to historical data. Habitat degradation, overfishing, and insufficient enforcement were the main reasons for resources declining. It is necessary to improve the management and enforcement of MPA to achieve the main conservation goal in Taiwan.
