摘要 | This article primarily explores the changes in the references and naming of material culture within the historical and spatial contexts of museums in different regions. It aims to understand how objects from Oceania are influenced by cultural structures, serving as substantial evidence for communication, identification, and absorption. In the vocabulary of traditional tribal societies in Oceania, there are often no corresponding terms for "art." What may be considered artistic—such as paintings, carvings, and decorations—can be seen within tribal society as sacred objects tied to beliefs, intertwining mythology, spiritual power, religion, and practical functions. Their visual forms express objects of spirit worship or ritual, rich with communication messages and social construction methods. When these objects are removed from their original contexts and enter museums, they become "collections" that are either stored or displayed. In the context of mainstream aesthetic tastes and expectations of artistic experience, they are often regarded as an artistic tradition independent of Western and Eastern civilizations, thus being classified as "designated as art" or "transformed into art." Museums interchangeably use terms such as "objects," "artifacts," "cultural relics," "specimens," "primitive art," or "treasures," which refer to similar physical entities. As a vehicle for the logical extrapolation of abstract concepts, material culture, under the interplay of Essentialism and Temporality, becomes a fundamental symbolic material of ethnicity, culture, and identity. Beyond showcasing ethnic characteristics, through the historical process of cultural dialectics from modernity to postmodernity, it maintains and expresses the possibilities of social existence, revealing how groups within the region intermingle and merge into what is termed "material culture within museums." |
