摘要Fungi are important in human society, the economy, and ecological sustainability. However, global climate change and environmental pollution threaten fungal diversity. Therefore, it is urgent to strengthen the investigation and research of fungal diversity. Fungal collections within herbaria serve as significant resources for species discovery. The herbarium of the National Museum of Natural Science of Taiwan (TNM) houses a substantial fungal collection of approximately 37,000 specimens from 49 countries. Most specimens originate from East Asia, especially focusing on Taiwan and mainland China, amount to around 26,000 and 8,800 specimens, respectively. Notably, TNM's fungal collection has over 320 holotype specimens, including 173 contributed by TNM's mycologists, encompassing renowned medicinal fungi such as Ganoderma lingzhi and Sanghuangporus sanghuang. Efforts to digitize the collection have been fruitful, with 99% of specimens now accessible through an online collection management system, fostering greater accessibility for the public and researchers and encouraging research collaborations. Additionally, approximately 11% of the collection has undergone DNA barcoding, enabling researchers to conduct studies on fungal diversity using both morphological and molecular methods. Analysis of collection growth reveals a consistent increase, with around 1,200 specimens added annually over the past three decades, underscoring the museum's commitment to preserving biodiversity. Overall, TNM's fungal collections are promising resources for studying fungal diversity in East Asia.
