摘要The relic and endemic species, Amentotaxus formosana Li was evaluated as endangered (EN) status in the Red List of Vascular Plants in Taiwan. Its populations limited geographic distribution in the broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 800 to 1,400 meters in the southern Central Mountains of Taiwan. Genetic variation, genetic divergence and DNA barcoding all pointed out that well differentiated species needed to be preserved but little evaluation on traits of environmental compacts for conservation. Our results are the first report of A. formosana on anatomical peculiarities of leaf traits, such as leaf vascular cambium, transfusion tracheids, thick outer cuticle layer on both sides of epidermis, the actinocytic type of stoma complex with an arrangement of 6 to 8 subsidiary cells, most 2-celled in between distance among stomata, and no stomata distribution in clusters. The leaf vascular cambium rarely found in gymnosperms produces secondary vascular tissues which are enclosed inside thick-walled bundle sheath cells with dense phenolic contents. The transfusion extensions with elongate sclerenchyma tangle to support an auxiliary strength from midrib to the broad leaf blade. This peculiar transfusion extension extends from bundle sheath or transfusion tissue at sideway direction instead of up-and-down, perpendicular to leaf surface, and differs from the bundle sheath extension, indicating an important role in structure and function for stretching out from leaf vasculature. Occurrence of leaf vascular cambium for long-lived functions in water supply and long-term photosynthates assemblage, a trade-off between thick layer of cuticle and dramatically large stomata areas of leaf in this species for management in water loss from insensitive environment, and the impact of drought by foehn wind while sprouting seasons may bring to mind to elucidate strategies for conservation perspectives.
