摘要 | Chloroplasts of most vascular plants have highly conserved structure, severely limiting opportunities for comparative studies of chloroplast traits and photosynthetic functioning. However, Selaginella (Lycophyta) has high chloroplast diversity. We show that the ancestral chloroplasts of Selaginella are not diverse and appear typical of vascular plants, likely reflecting a common ancestor of all vascular plant chloroplasts. Major environmental changes over hundreds of millions of years are associated with Selaginellachloroplast diversification along different paths in different geographical regions of the Earth. Most present day chloroplast diversity arose relatively recently in the Cenozoic. This diversity includes monoplastidy, i.e. a single giant chloroplast per cell, which is strongly associated with deep shade habitats, and is further diversified with variations on morphology and ultrastructure often found in different leaf tissues. This chloroplast diversity has the potential to provide major lessons on photosynthesis not available from typical model plants. |
