| 摘要 | The National Museum of Natural Science is holding the special exhibition “Matsu Pilgrimage: A mobile Goddess in Taiwan” in 2011. This special exhibition concerning the phenomenon of pilgrimages, which took a year and a half to plan and arrange, involves the efforts of countless Matsu temples, believers, cultural workers, and experts and scholars, and opened on May 11. The author is the curator of this exhibition, and seeks to explain the exhibition from a curator’s angle in this article. The author discusses issues connected with Matsu pilgrimage culture, and also provides a reading and interpretation of the spatial form of the exhibition, including spatial relationships, objects, and images, in order to initiate a dialogue concerning relevant topics.
This article first investigates theory concerning incense-offering processions and pilgrimages, distills four exhibition issues from this theory, and develops eight exhibition displays topics from these issues. The author then uses his reading and interpretation of the spatial form of the exhibition, including the main imagery of the exhibition venue, the visual axis, spatial linkage, and the angle of believers’ bodies, to develop a dialog with the foregoing issues. Based on this dialogue, the article proposes a model explaining the in-depth meaning of Matsu pilgrimages in Taiwan in its conclusions. The article asserts that representative pilgrimages, such as the Dajia and Baishatun Matsu pilgrimages, combine two forces: They are driven by both the concept of genealogy and the notion of penance; the merger of these two forces, and their relative waxing and waning, construct the spectrum of meaning of Matsu pilgrimages in Taiwan. |
