For older adults, social participation supports social connections, reduces loneliness, promotes creative aging, and mitigates ageism. In Taiwan, the population of older adults is increasing. However, older adults remain underrepresented among museum visitors. Visitor studies on this demographic, particularly those who rarely visit art museums, remain limited. This study draws on Falk and Dierking’s Contextual Model of Learning and Mezirow’s transformative learning theory to explore how art museum experiences shape learning and perceptions among older non-visitors. Interviews were conducted at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum from 2023 to 2024 with six middle-aged to elderly participants aged 55 and above and four elderly non-visitors aged 65 and above. Post-visit follow-up interviews were conducted within 10 months of the initial interviews.
Findings revealed that psychological barriers such as disinterest and perceived inaccessibility were shaped by prior experience. Positive experiences were strongly influenced by attention to physiological needs, including seating, readable guides, and age-friendly environments. Visiting the museum triggered a re-evaluation of assumptions and a process of personal discovery of meaning in art. Half of the participants reported lasting impacts and increased interest in viewing exhibitions. This study highlights the potential of art museums

as inclusive spaces for later life learning and calls for age-friendly strategies that respond to the needs of older non-visitors.
