What types of topics should be addressed by national museums and what types of content should be included in their exhibitions? The current trend in blockbuster exhibitions and rearrangement of permanent collections is a reminder of the present attitudes and values of national museums. National museums must possess three basic elements: architecture that symbolically reflects the nation; collections of national significance; and compliance with national cultural policy. National museums are being confronted with new challenges in the 21st century, including globalization, advances in information and communication technology, and economic recession. Is it necessary for national museums to respond to exhibition trends in terms of interactivity, entertainment and technology? As a result of digitalization and the development of technology, have traditional museum values been challenged and changes introduced to incorporate these elements in national museum exhibitions? These are the questions that this author has focused on in the research of recent exhibitions in national museums. The aim of this study is to discuss economics and politics as possible new directions for national museum exhibitions. The author first analyzed social trends and visitor demands to determine the characteristics of national museum exhibitions, and compared several recent cases in Japan, the UK and Taiwan to draw conclusions. According to the findings, national museums should reposition themselves to achieve their mandates. They should also introduce a wide range of issues in exhibitions to convey social values. This should be combined with already incorporated new technologies to break through the barriers between museums and visitors. Good museum exhibitions attract repeat visitors. National museums must aim to break through current barriers, and to present exhibitions using innovative and creative methods that will ultimately set new standards for national museums in the 21st century. |
