摘要During the Japanese colonial period, Luoxi Stone was designated as "Ink Jade" by Japanese scholars and artisans, owing to its fine-grained texture, dark coloration, and superior ink-grinding performance, qualities comparable to China's renowned inkstone lithologies. Inkstones carved from Luoxi Stone were esteemed for their ability to retain moisture and yield a deep, glossy black ink, elevating the material to one of the most prized components among the Four Treasures of the Study.
Luoxi Stone is quarried from the Zhuoshui River basin in central Taiwan. It exhibits chromatic variations dominated by black, red, and green hues. Although the rock lacks well-developed slaty cleavage, the presence of metamorphic epidote within its mineral assemblage substantiates its classification as hard shale, a low-grade metamorphic lithology.
The mineralogical composition of Luoxi Stone is characterized by phyllosilicates (chlorite and muscovite), quartz, and minor plagioclase. The green-spotted domains consist primarily of chlorite intergrown with subordinate mica, accompanied by small amounts of quartz. Comparative analysis with other hard shales, such as those from the Yushan Main Range Formation, Dajian Sandstone, and Baileng Formation, reveals
that these lithologies contain higher proportions of quartz and feldspar than Luoxi Stone, underscoring compositional distinctions. In contrast, the hard shale of the Shibachongxi Formation exhibits the closest mineralogical affinity to Luoxi Stone.
Lithologically, Luoxi Stone is a fine-grained, compact hard shale composed mainly of quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, and chlorite. It belongs to the category of low-grade metamorphic rocks with poorly developed cleavage. Petrographic examination shows quartz grains dispersed within a matrix of chlorite and muscovite. The relative hardness of quartz facilitates abrasion of ink sticks during grinding, while
muscovite exfoliates along cleavage planes, imparting a reflective sheen to the ink. The softer nature of muscovite compared to quartz also mitigates wear on brush tips.
Overall, Luoxi Stone exhibits fine-grained texture, dense fabric, and absence of significant fractures, resulting in excellent water-retention capacity, properties consistent with high-quality inkstone material.
These geological findings provide a framework for comparative studies with Japan's Nachi Black Stone.
