摘要Seismic profiles and bathymetric data indicate that the types of submarine canyons around Taiwan are closely related to continental shelf width. In regions with narrow shelves, both river-connected and shore-connected submarine canyons can develop. For example, all six submarine canyons off eastern Taiwan are shore-connected, because the shelf is extremely narrow (<10 km), allowing fluvial sediments to bypass the shelf and directly enter the canyon head for transport into the deep sea.
In contrast, canyons on the broad shelves of the Taiwan Strait and the East China Sea (such as the Penghu, Mianhua, and North Mianhua Canyons) are shelf-incising canyons, which cannot remain connected to rivers once sea level rises. Seismic profiles and bathymetric data further show that canyon heads in both the southwestern and eastern offshore regions of Taiwan exhibit collapse and erosional features, suggesting that these canyons remain active conduits even during high sea-level periods, effectively cutting into shelf strata and transporting sediments from the shelf margin into the deep sea. At present high sea level, 7 out of 13 submarine canyons around Taiwan (n = 7, 54%) are located on narrow shelves and remain connected to the shoreline—far exceeding the global average of 4%. Moreover, 5 canyons (n = 5, 38%) are river-connected, also much higher than the global average of 3%, and all are situated on narrow shelves. Submarine canyons around Taiwan, whether shore-connected or
river-connected, are consistently distributed on narrow shelves, demonstrating that canyon development in this region is primarily controlled by shelf width.
