摘要At 1:47 am on September 21, 1999, central Taiwan experienced a Mw7.6 Chichi earthquake, the second strongest event over the past century. It resulted in 2,415 dead and more than 11,000 injured, as well as financial losses of approximately NT$300 billion. After 26 years, most of the earthquake damage has been repaired, and only a few earthquake relics have been preserved. The precious earthquake relics of Chichi earthquake, just like the “fossil” evidence in Anthropocene, preserve a record of the past Taiwan. Two of them are the 921 Earthquake Museum and the Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park which are two branches of the National Museum of Natural Science, Taiwan. Since 2004/9/21, the 921 Earthquake Museum was preserve the campus of the Guangfu Junior High School, including fault displacement, collapsed buildings, and raised riverbed. Compared with the former, the 8m in depth fault trench excavation in the Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park is more easily damaged and difficult to preserve. Since 2013, the fault trench has experienced six collapses, starting within the first month of opening. Five of these occurred on the north wall of the fault trench in May and August 2013, August 2015, September 2016, and June 2017. Those collapses were caused by groundwater issues in soft and young strata, and treated by a pumping system. Furthermore, the only 6th collapse at the southern wall occurred last year. The 505 mm daily rainfall of the Typhoon Kemi on July 25, 2024 is the highest record in past decade, and 1.5 times that caused the previous northern wall collapse. Extreme climate change driven by global warming poses even greater challenges to the fault trench.
