| 摘要 | The genus Scutellera Lamarck, 1801 is the type genus of the family Scutelleridae. It includes large and brightly coloured jewel bugs with considerable importance in agriculture and forestry. Early authors used this generic name in a broad sense, containing various non-related pentatomoids with enlarged scutellum; after the late 19th century the genus was restricted to three species distributed in the Indomalaya. These species, however, were marred by a surprising amount of taxonomical and nomenclatural confusion.
In frames of a comprehensive revision based on all available type specimens and hundreds of non-types from all over the distribution area, the identities of the species were clarified, taxonomic problems were elucidated and nomenclatural errors were corrected. The species were redescribed and illustrated, their considerable intraspecific variability was explored and documented, and their bionomics and distribution was reviewed.
Our investigation not only sheds light on the taxonomic problems accumulated in connection with Scutellera, but also underscores the importance of revisiting collections in a modern framework of biodiversity research. By illuminating the taxonomic history of these insects spanning over two centuries, we offer insights into the evolution of collection practices and the crucial role of specimen-based research in the Indo-Pacific region. Our study contributes to the overarching narrative of biodiversity collections, fostering a collaborative understanding of regional practices in the preservation and study of natural history. |
