| 摘要 | We conducted genetic material collection and mitochondrial DNA sequencing on 11 baleen whale bone specimens from several natural history museums,government institutes, and early private collections in Taiwan. The objectives were species identification and understanding the diversity of baleen whales in the waters surrounding Taiwan. Sample sources were included from complete 28 display specimens, ; the others were from incomplete cranial bones, ear bones, mandibular bones, and scapular bones. Each specimen was subjected to short30 fragment sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA control region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Sequence similarity and genetic distances were compared with homologous DNA sequences from known baleen whale species, and molecular phylogenetic trees were reconstructed for species identification. The results of species identification for the 11 specimens were as follows: 1 humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), 1 fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), 2 Omura's whales (B. omurai), 3 Bryde's whales (B. edeni), and 4 common minke whales (B. acutorostrata). Notably, the fin whale and the humpback whale specimens deposited in two national museums are the only confirmed natural history specimen of their kind in local Taiwanese collections. |
