摘要INTRODUCTION
The Western Foothills of Taiwan is assigned to the frontal zone of this collisional belt between the Philippine Sea plate and the Chinese continental margin of the Eurasian plate. Terraces are well developed along rivers which flows through the Western Foothills. The terraces along the Tsailiao River have been uplifted and deformed due to the activity of the zone. However, the formative process of the terraces has not been clarified because previous researches are insufficient for accurate distribution and of the terraces, as well as lithological and chronological descriptions of their deposits.

PURPOSE
We have investigated the terrace deposits along the Tsailiao river to clarify the formative process, chronology, and tectonics of the terraces.

METHODS
・20 m DEM ・Contour map ・Hillshade map ・CS map ・Topographical sections Longitudinal profile of terrace surfaces Field survey Lithological description Sampling 14C dating CNS analysis Chronology, formative process, and tectonics of the terraces

RESULTS and DISSCUSSION
Longitudinal profile of the terrace surfaces Sedimentary facies, 14C dating, and CNS analysis
DISCUSSION
・The terraces have been divided into T1, T2, and T3 terraces and their deposits are assigned to the Greenlandian, Northgrippian to Early Meghalayan, and Late Meghalayan ages, respectively.
・Regional uplift that caused formation of terraces occurred at least three times during the Holocene.
・Two anticlinal structures were caused by active folding of underlying basement rocks during the Holocene.
・All the deposits of the terraces are composed of channel fill and overlying flood-plain deposits and they are considered to have been formed by meandering rivers.
・The terrace deposits involve freshwater bivalves and other fossils (foraminifers, marine invertebrate, land mammal fossils, etc...) derived from the underlying basement rocks. The outcrop of the terrace deposits at Loc. 5. Schematic geological section across the Tsailiao River Field survey area
・The terraces in this study area were roughly divided into T1, T2, and T3 in descending order.
・This profile shows two anticlinal structures at north and east of Tsailiao. edian values of 14C ages are showed with sample sites by this study and Hsieh and Knuepfer (2002).
