| 摘要 | This study aimed to examine sexual dimorphism and ontogeny in the dentition of the Asia nelephant (Elephas maximus), based on tooth and mandible measurements. Elephas maximus materials were studied from several museums. The width, enamel thickness, and lamellar frequency of all available teeth were measured. Descriptive statistics, Student’s t-test, and an analysis of covariance were used to evaluate differences in morphological metrics between the two sexes. There was no significant difference in most dental parameters between genders. Also, there was no sexual dimorphism in the size of the mandible. In addition, similar growth patterns appeared in the dentition of males and females. Based on evidence obtained from this study of the Asian elephant, research on fossil elephantid remains can therefore avoid confusion about sexual dimorphism in dental mandibular parameters. |
